This is Dragon Magazine 114, from October, 1986. The cover is by David Martin and the scantily clad moon worshipper caused quite a stir at the time. I’ve read (though I am not quite sure where at this point, so I can’t confirm it) that the painting was apparently toned down before the magazine was printed. It didn’t help: some folks felt it was too lurid a cover and wrote in to complain. Then folks who objected to the objections weighed in (variations on the theme of “women just don’t like fantasy anyway”), followed by objections to the objections to the objections.
I dunno. I’m not a fan of cheesecake and chainmail bikinis, but I like this cover rather a lot and I don’t read it as lurid at all? Sure, the lady is only wearing a see-through robe, but her nudity is hardly to focus of the painting. There are plenty of women on other covers that are both more clothed and more sexualized (the covers of 47 and 80 both spring to mind). In fact, the atmosphere of this cover feels very much in line with imagery I associate with pagan and Wiccan esoteric beliefs, which emphasize the power of women. I can’t help but wonder if on an unspoken level, it wasn’t the nudity but the implied paganism that got folks upset in the first place.
Anyway, inside the issue is an excellent reworked treatment for an NPC witch class for D&D, the ecology of the  rhemoraz and an ad for the Dragonbone electronic dice roller. If you’re looking for an idea for a Christmas present for your old pal VintageRPG…

givings away
Hawthorne was a hearty devourer of books, and in certain moods of mind it made very little difference what the volume before him happened to be. An old play or an old newspaper sometimes gave him wondrous great content, and he would ponder the sleepy, uninteresting sentences as if they contained immortal mental aliment. He once told me he found       1   givings away in some       2 gestures and beckonings, and givings away of small bunches of early violets       3 licenses, and bridesmaids, and carriages, and givings-away, and       4   (or “givings away”), a term derived from the Chinook jargon word potlatch, “to give”       5 he told me of Lamb’s “givings away”       6 the thefts, the robberies, the givings away. There was no one who would not rather have had all those things in flames       7   these givings away, as well as       8 givings away of [ ] heartsease and rue       9 here are their givings away [ ] all       10   standing there a minute And holding the thrifty man’s book of “givings-away”       11 “givings-away” in one hand, and say:       12 There are these two givings-away. What are the two?       13   across the found time between his givings away to street, or ask favors of       14 the world, with society, with the entourage consisting for him, in its most pressing form of, say, [ ] this challenge, as I have called it, in some way that will sort of meet it without givings-away. These three       15 would Two Givings-Away.       16   You know, we all make deals, I suppose, in terms of how we think about the process of our aging. It’s a series of givings away, a making       17

It’s a series of givings away, a making peace with givings away. I had thought, as many or most people do, that I was in an earlier stage of givings away than it turns out I am. It’s kind of a relentless series of adjustments to what you can do, in particular the way you can’t think any longer. Your inability to sustain a continuity of focus. And those are accumulated deletions of ability. And you adjust—you’d better adjust, or you adjust whether you want to or not.”

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly: A Split Draw For Jermell Charlo and Brian Castano

Published: July 22, 2021
This past weekend on July 17th at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas, one of the most fascinating and significant bouts of the year took place for the undisputed Junior Middleweight championship between IBF/WBC/WBA and Ring Magazine champion Jermell Charlo (34-1-1, 18 KOs) and WBO champion Brian Castano (17-0-2, 12 KOs).
After 12 rounds of tense back and forth action, the fight was ruled a split draw, with the judges scoring the bout 114-113 (Steve Weisfeld) for Castano, 117-111 (Nelson Vazquez) for Charlo, and one final score of 114-114 (Tim Cheatham).
Ultimately, the fight for the undisputed Junior Middleweight crown ended up being one of the most disputed fights of 2021. The fight itself and how it came together represented what is positive about today’s era, but the aftermath took the spotlight, highlighting the negatives that have impacted boxing for years.
THE GOOD
Charlo-Castano was the seventh unification bout in the Junior Middleweight division since the turn of the century. The fight had lofty expectations as some of the unification bouts at 154 included Floyd Mayweather-Saul Alvarez, Oscar De La Hoya-Fernando Vargas, and arguably the most exciting in the division’s history in Felix Trinidad-Fernando Vargas.
The bout would also be the first undisputed championship bout at 154 since Ronald "Winky" Wright took on Shane Mosley in March 2004.
Charlo headed into the fight with Castano as the betting favorite and the better-known fighter holding victories over Austin Trout, Jeison Rosario, and Erickson Lubin. The Texas native’s only blemish on his record was a loss to Tony Harrison in 2018 that was avenged a year later.
The victory in the rematch against Harrison gave Charlo the distinction as a two-time WBC Junior Middleweight titleholder. The eighth-round knockout that Charlo scored over Rosario in September 2020 earned him the IBF, WBA, and Ring Magazine titles.
Castano, who hails from Argentina, was a much more accomplished amateur than Charlo winning the gold medal at the 2010 South American Games, holding wins over current unified Welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. and Middleweight contender Sergiy Derevyanchenko.
As a professional, Castano won the interim WBA Junior Middleweight title in 2016 that was later elevated to “regular” status. Arguably, Castano’s most significant fight before facing Charlo was against Erislandy Lara in 2019 in a fight that was ruled a draw.
Leading into the fight with Charlo, Castano won the WBO 154-pound title in a dominant victory over Brazil’s Patrick Teixeira.
When Charlo and Castano finally stepped in the ring against each other, it was an opportunity for Charlo to cement himself a spot in the Hall-of-Fame and for Castano to stamp himself as one of the best fighters to come out of Argentina.
The fight ended up living up to expectations, becoming one of the best fights of 2021, filled with momentum shifts and both men laying everything on the line in the championship rounds.
Castano was able to apply effective pressure throughout the bout, putting Charlo against the ropes landing right hands and left hooks during exchanges. The Argentinean’s defense was showcased, as he was able to block with his gloves a majority of Charlo’s punches.
The right hand, in particular, was set up numerous times by Castano, who showed patience in making sure that the punch landed accurately.
For Charlo, his best moments in the fight were when he was able to keep the fight in the center of the ring utilizing his jab. The two-time WBC Junior Middleweight champion out-landed his opponent 53 to 9 in total jabs landed, throwing more than 100 jabs than Castano.
The unified champion’s best rounds in the fight came in the second and 10th rounds, where he was able to hurt and visibly stun Castano with left hands during exchanges. Judge Steve Weisfeld, who scored the fight 114-113 for Castano, scored the 10th round 10-8 for Charlo.
Charlo’s stand in the 10th round after clearly losing the previous three was not only one of the highlights of the fight, but of his career.
For fans, that didn’t know who Castano was or were unfamiliar as to his skill level, this was quite the introduction. The Argentinean displayed skill coming forward while remaining defensively responsible.
On multiple viewings, the fight seems to favor Castano as many close rounds like the fifth, sixth, ninth, and 11th rounds, which at first looked like they could have been scored for Charlo, now favor the WBO titleholder. However, on the night of the fight, a draw felt like a fitting conclusion more than a satisfying one.
“Brian Castano is one hell of a better fighter than anyone gave him credit for, and he came to fight for his life Saturday,” Charlo said in a statement on his Instagram account. “If fights are scored as a whole, I landed the harder and better shots, but boxing isn’t scored that way. Boxing is scored round by round. I’ve always said to take a belt from a champion, you need to take the belt, and the judges felt neither of us did enough to take those other belts and ruled a draw.
“I don’t want to become undisputed by a narrow controversial decision. I want to make a statement. I didn’t do my part to get the KO, and as always, I will continue to learn and improve. When we run it back, just like I adjusted in Harrison II, there will be no doubt about the result.”
THE BAD
A great fight that is scored a draw deserves a rematch. Unfortunately, with the number of belts on the line in an undisputed match, there are bound to be mandatories for those titles.
Castano may have a mandatory defense against the WBO’s number one contender in Australia’s Tim Tszyu (19-0, 15 KOs).
Charlo, on his end, has two mandatories that could be forced. Former Charlo victim Erickson Lubin has earned a mandatory defense under the WBC, winning six fights in a row, including a sixth-round stoppage over Jeison Rosario since being stopped by Charlo in the first round in 2017.
Also, it has been reported that the IBF has ordered a mandatory defense for Charlo against Russia’s Bakhram Murtazaliev (19-0, 14 KOs). The Russian has been the mandatory for Charlo since November 2019 and has since fought on the undercard of events headlined by Charlo.
In the past, we have seen sanctioning bodies take a backseat to allow for unification bouts; however, with Charlo-Castano resulting in a draw without a rematch clause in place, it may result in fans having to wait for a rematch unless something can be negotiated.
“If they can work out, among them, and they can work out the mandatories, whatever they are,” stated Brian Castano’s manager Sebastian Contursi to Boxingscene.com “Because we don’t even know if we have a mandatory due for the WBO – we were so focused on this unification fight. But needless to say, you guys know that we would prefer unification like this and not any crappy mandatory here and there.
“That’s from my perspective. But it’s not like it’s a guaranteed rematch because of these things. You cannot guarantee a rematch because there’s four sanctioning bodies, with four different mandatories involved.”
THE UGLY
As is with numerous cases throughout boxing history, the headlining story in the aftermath of Charlo-Castano were the three judges who scored the bout.
The scorecard in particular that has garnered the most attention is that of Nelson Vazquez, who scored the fight for Charlo with a score of 117-111. Nelson only gave Castano rounds three, seven, and nine.
While all three judges scored the final three rounds for Charlo, Vasquez’s scorecard is perplexing. To only score three rounds for Castano is incompetent and should be investigated, as it doesn’t represent what took place inside the ring.
The scorecard falls in line with recent deplorable scorecards such as Carlos Sucre’s 117-111 for Juan Francisco Estrada in his rematch with Roman Gonzalez and Adalaide Byrd’s 118-110 scorecard for Saul Alvarez in his first encounter with Gennadiy Golovkin.
In a recent mailbag article on RingTV.com, Editor-in-Chief of Ring Magazine, Doug Fischer, brought up the fact that promoters are the ones that pay for the judges to perform their jobs as well as their travel and lodging. This, of course, can lead to a conflict of interest when one promoter promotes the house fighter and is paying the judges.
Judges are rarely interviewed by the media due to either lack of interest or availability. When a scorecard as terrible as Vasquez’s is provided, the judge should explain how they arrived at such a score.
Accountability for judges needs to be at the forefront of change in boxing. Not just for the betterment of the sport but for the sake of the two pugilists that step inside the ring and put their lives on the line.

Out in the World: Still Life Photography between Art and Commerce
The intertwining of art and commercial photography is nowhere more evident than in the genre of still life
Tumblr media
Albert Renger-Patzsch, advertisement for Kaffee Hag, from Die Welt ist schön (The World is Beautiful) Kurt Wolff, Munich, 1928 / Andy Warhol ‘Brillo Boxes’ 1964 From Andy Warhol Moderna Museet, Stockholm, 1968
Photography may have triumphed in art over the last couple of decades, but questions linger as to whether art gets the best out of it. Many artistically minded photographers admit to finding art an interesting place to visit but they wouldn’t want to live there. It can be airless, self-serving and very slow. (Photography permits rapid artistic development for those who want it, but curators and collectors rarely do.) Moreover, given that art photography triumphed by remaking, diverting or otherwise contemplating the medium’s ‘applied’ forms – such as the document, the film still, the advertisement and the archival image – there is always much in common between art photographs and those we see elsewhere.
Tumblr media
Karen Knorr The Principles of Political Economy 1990. Colour Cibachrome 114×91 cm From the series ‘Capital’
Nothing demonstrates this better than the promiscuous still life photograph, present everywhere from the gallery wall and the family album to billboards and mail-order catalogues. Picked fruit and cut flowers, artefacts of glass, plastic, wood and metal, objects rare and commonplace, the still life bridges art and commerce. Its rise from the lowest genre to the equal of landscape and portraiture followed the rise of commodity culture. In the 1820s and ’30s, the pioneers of photography could not resist gathering objects before their cameras. Nicéphore Niépce shot a dining table laid for one. Louis Daguerre contrived arrangements of classical sculpture and paintings. William Henry Fox Talbot showed off his china and glassware. Were these images documents, pictures for contemplation or advertising? All three. The still life was ideal for a world of accelerated manufacture and exchange, mobilizing desires and expressing tastes. Even the humble table, the basic support for the still life, was unthinkable without its marketable image. As Karl Marx famously declared in his 1867 passage on commodity fetishism, a table ‘not only stands with its feet on the ground, but in relation to all other commodities, it stands on its head, and evolves out of its wooden brain grotesque ideas, far more wonderful than if it were to begin dancing of its own free will.’1 Two years later, Comte de Lautréamont was after the new beauty of ‘the chance encounter, on an operating table, of a sewing machine and an umbrella’.2 Such wild tableaux! In the hallucination of capital the still life is a hybrid of sculpture and montage.
When photographers made their bid for modern artistic significance in the 1920s many were key figures in the medium’s applied fields, notably reportage, portraiture and the advertising still life. They included Man Ray, Edward Steichen, Laure Albin-Guillot, Helmar Lerski and Albert Renger-Patzsch. Others made still lifes that could be taken for advertisements (Edward Weston, László Moholy-Nagy, André Kertész, Heinz Hajek-Halke). But as Modernists true to their métier, the aim was to make good photographs and the ‘art’ part could be left to take care of itself. Photographers as different as Man Ray and Walker Evans insisted their medium was not art but it could be an art – a distinction lost on many today. Exhibiting or publishing a book of one’s commissioned work might be enough to shift the emphasis from the things depicted to the depiction, from anonymity to named author, from paid work to Works, from applied art to fine art. Context, as any photographer will tell you, is key.
Tumblr media
Mike Mandel & Larry Sultan, Evidence, 1977 Clatworthy Colorvues, 1977
This indirect path to artistic status produced extraordinary images – and they could only have been made that way. A weak claim to art can be a great stimulus for photography, but a strong claim can crush it. This is why so many contemporary photographers feel constrained by the anxious categories and stifling agendas of art world photography and look to the freedom of that older attitude. But this has proved difficult. In the 1950s and ’60s, commercial photography became wary of the unpredictability of art and tried to develop a reliable science of image design (the TV series Mad Men, 2007–ongoing, nails this shift brilliantly). Images would be vetted or even designed in the boardroom. In his 1964 essay ‘Rhetoric of the Image’, Roland Barthes examined a still life advertisement for Panzani, a food company contrived to connote ‘Italianicity’ to the French.3 It was the start of ‘photography theory’. Branded tins and packets intermingle with fresh fruit and vegetables spilling from a rustic net bag against a scarlet backdrop. It was a ruthlessly designed image and, like its makers, Barthes accounted for its every aspect from colour, lighting, composition and text to its committee authorship. He described the ideological sleight of hand that endows manufactured goods with ‘naturalness’. And it is photography that facilitates the slippage most effectively. It is unique in appearing to point at things transparently (‘there it is’) while fashioning appearance artificially (‘this is how it is’). Photographs are taken and made, natural and cultural. Barthes’s semiotic critique also aimed to be a science of popular signs and advertising got the analysis it deserved.
This calculated attitude was quite of a piece with Pop art’s approach to commodity images. Andy Warhol’s stacked ‘Brillo Boxes’ (1964) were a strategic fusion of the readymade and the still life, and it made little difference whether you saw them exhibited or in photographic reproduction: the flash of recognition was all. Warhol, the former ad man, grasped Marcel Duchamp’s insight that the industrial/commercial object plucked and placed incongruously (like Lautréamont’s monstrous encounter) will hit the viewer with the deadpan force of a snapshot. But a less remarked legacy of Pop was the polarizing of art’s attitudes to commerce into rictus-grin irony or high- minded disgust. It led to a fraught attitude to money, to the commodity status of art works themselves and, indirectly, to a stand- off between art photography and applied photography. Since the 1960s, the still life photograph in art has passed through the polemic Postmodern image–texts of Barbara Kruger (a former art director at Condé Nast), the post-classical allegories of Olivier Richon and Karen Knorr (whose first joint publication was a cookery book), and the photography-as-sculpture-montage-joke of Fischli/Weiss, Gabriel Orozco and Vik Muniz (a former advertiser). All of which is Art with a capital ‘A’, all of it keen to distance itself from the still life as Commerce (capital ‘C’), even though commerce is often the subject matter.
Tumblr media
Olivier Richon, Studium, 2003
Consider two examples from either side of Pop, both by figures better known for other things. In 1955, Walker Evans published ‘Beauties of the Common Tool’ in Fortune magazine: five exquisitely restrained still lifes of one-dollar pliers and wrenches. Reproduced larger than life, they were monuments to blue-collar labour. In his accompanying text Evans praised them for holding out against overdesigned and image-led manufacture, while his photos resisted the graphic opulence typical of Fortune. In 1992, the BBC commissioned 20 artists to make public billboards, including the young Damien Hirst, who was the only one keen to do more than simply re-present gallery art. He approached a professional still life photographer to help shoot exquisitely restrained pairs of objects: a hammer with a peach and a cucumber with a pot of Vaseline. They formed two panels of a rotating tri-vision billboard; the third read ‘The Problems with Relationships’. On the street it looked like advertising with nothing to sell but an idea. Evans and Hirst were fashioning still life as a pitch-perfect intervention beyond art. However, whereas Hirst remade his billboard in 1996, exhibited it and sold it, Evans let his magazine work slip into obscurity.
Few photographers find these options appealing, preferring a more open situation. The work of British photographer Jason Evans is exemplary here. For 20 years he has moved between still life, portraiture, fashion and music photography, and between commissions, collaborations, websites and images made for fun. He has exhibited in major museums but refuses any hierarchy between the wall, the magazine page and the computer screen. Everything he makes is driven by curiosity about the medium: its processes, transformative qualities and its powers of proposition.

A request from i-D magazine to shoot a Miu Miu skirt is an opportunity to see clothing as a Modernist still life or sculpture. Christmas present packaging by Gareth Pugh is photographed for Fantastic Man magazine with the precisionist flair of the machine aesthetic. An experiment by the design provocateurs Dunne & Raby to harness energy emitted by live rodents leads to images that update the paranoiac lab science of the 1950s. When Evans exhibits such laconically elegant photographs they carry this astute assimilation of the best applied photography of the past. Little surprise then that Evans’s touchstone is Evidence (1977), the gnomic book of photographs gathered by artists Mike Mandel and Larry Sultan from police, scientific and fire department archives. Strip the most functional photography to its bare essentials and you’re left with enigmas, not facts.
Tumblr media

With its use of images and objects from the recent past, there is a twinge of ‘retro’ here, comparable in some respects to the work of photographers – for all their differences – such as Christopher Williams and Roe Ethridge. This is less nostalgia than a sign of how hard it is to develop an artistic relation to the very new. ‘Design just a little dated will interest any artist. Design current is always terrible. Anyone who has tried to find a good contemporary lamp or clock will know what I mean.’4 So declared Walker Evans. How perceptive. He wasn’t writing off the aesthetic of any era, merely noting that not-newness is what often permits artistic access.
Countering the restraint and historical consciousness of his black and white work, Jason Evans’s colour photography is a nower-than- now world of crazed form and crafty process. The hugely popular website thedailynice.com is an outlet for his compulsive photo-notations that have no other home. There’s only ever one image to see, which changes daily, and there is no archive. What you are likely to get is a disarming configuration of colour and shape presented as a considered observation of the made stuff that fills the material world. Fittingly, when thedailynice.com briefly became a gallery exhibition in 2009, visitors could help themselves to prints from a big cardboard box on a table.

Evans’s artwork for musicians such as Wild Beasts and Four Tet reminds you that record covers can still be hotly anticipated and dearly prized. The sleeve for Four Tet’s There is Love in You (2010) started with the scavenging of test prints made each morning by the digital photo labs of central London. Colour spectrums, bright flowers and fine geometric grids will tell technicians if their printers are working correctly. These were pinned on his studio wall and photographed on colour negative film, which was then subjected to a hole-punch.

The tiny, rough-edged discs were arranged meticulously on a sheet of glass from which a positive print was made. The digital/analogue blend is a consummate visual expression of the electro-acoustic music. Look closely and see that it could only have been made this way. This is still life as pure process, as profound as the best of the process-driven photography in art, but it’s less po-faced and lot more joyous.
This fluid, exploratory and untormented attitude to image-making has much in common with that earlier era of only vague distinctions between art photography and applied photography. If Evans’s refreshing work is now coming to wider attention it’s because it offers so many paths for photography around the Art Obstacle. Besides, in a climate where we are now provided with media-ready art the way supermarkets provide oven-ready chickens, doesn’t most art photography start to seem more applied than fine?

8987 John Edwin Barnes Born Poplar. Enlisted into the 3rd Militia Battalion Essex Regiment as Number 9431 on 17th October 1906, aged 17 years 7 months. A carman by profession living at 66 Hamsworth{?} Road, Canning Town. In June 1907 he attested for Regular Service and after basic training at Warley depot, was posted to 2nd Battalion Essex later in 1907. Posted from the 2nd Battalion to the 1st Battalion stationed in on Quetta 5th January 1911. In Quetta he served with C Company. 1911 Census refers. C Company was merged to form part of the new “Y” Company when the battalion moved to a four company structure in 1913.
The eight month campaign in Gallipoli was fought by Commonwealth and French forces in an attempt to force Turkey out of the war, to relieve the deadlock of the Western Front in France and Belgium, and to open a supply route to Russia through the Dardanelles and the Black Sea. The Allies landed on the peninsula on 25-26 April 1915; the 29th Division at Cape Helles in the south and the Australian and New Zealand Corps north of Gaba Tepe on the west coast, an area soon known as Anzac. On 6 August, further landings were made at Suvla, just north of Anzac, and the climax of the campaign came in early August when simultaneous assaults were launched on all three fronts. However, the difficult terrain and stiff Turkish resistance soon led to the stalemate of trench warfare. From the end of August, no further serious action was fought and the lines remained unchanged. The peninsula was successfully evacuated in December and early January 1916. The Helles Memorial serves the dual function of Commonwealth battle memorial for the whole Gallipoli campaign and place of commemoration for many of those Commonwealth servicemen who died there and have no known grave. The United Kingdom and Indian forces named on the memorial died in operations throughout the peninsula, the Australians at Helles. There are also panels for those who died or were buried at sea in Gallipoli waters. The memorial bears more than 21,000 names. There are four other Memorials to the Missing at Gallipoli. The Lone Pine, Hill 60, and Chunuk Bair Memorials commemorate Australian and New Zealanders at Anzac. The Twelve Tree Copse Memorial commemorates the New Zealanders at Helles. Naval casualties of the United Kingdom lost or buried at sea are recorded on their respective Memorials at Portsmouth, Plymouth and Chatham, in the United Kingdom.
Landing W Beach Gallipoli April 25th 1915 “C” Company 1st Battalion The Essex Regiment [Source: Essex Regiment Museum]  W Beach was one of the three allocated to 29th Division on 25th April 1915, and is arguably the most famous of them all. It was here the 1st Lancashire Fusiliers came ashore, and won ‘six Victoria Crosses before breakfast’. The 29th Division landing force consisted of 12 Battalions who were namely: Border Regiment, 1st Battalion Essex Regiment, Hampshire Regiment, King’s Own Scottish Borderers, 1st Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers, Royal Dublin Fusiliers, Royal Fusiliers – City of London Regiment, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, Royal Munster Fusiliers, 1/5th Royal Scots – Lothian Regiment, South Wales Borderers and the Worcestershire Regiment. The landings were to be made by day because of the restricted size of the beaches, the strong current, and fear of hidden reefs. The small size of the beaches was also the reason why there had to be so many landing places at Helles: S, V, W, X and Y Beaches. W Beach differed from the other beaches used that day, in that it was almost a cove, with an arc of high ground and a long, open beach. German advisors attached to the Turks had helped in the defence of this position, and redoubts had been placed on the heights with inter-locking fields of fire, wire in the shallow water and mines. They considered it almost impregnable from any sort of landing by small boats. The 1st Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers came ashore in companies. One came from HMS Implacable, the rest being brought in by naval personnel from HMS Euryalus. One platoon of the Anson Battalion was attached to them, and 1st Essex Regiment was to follow. About 50 yards from the beach, the boats were unhitched from the tows and they were rowed in. As the boats got nearer to the shore a tremendous fire was laid down by the Turks, causing heavy casualties. Men jumped out into the water, some drowning under the weight of their gear, others getting caught on the wire.  Despite this some men beat their way through the wire and assaulted the trenches in the area of the beach itself. Meanwhile a second force had landed a little to the north and found part of the beach here sheltered from the devastating fire. Captain Thomas Frankland then took his men forward to the Turkish positions here, and this flank was eliminated. Of the 950 who attacked, 533 were killed, wounded or missing; a casualty rate higher even than the first wave at Anzac had borne. In this brave effort the regiment had won 6 VCs (the regiment was thereafter famous for its “6 VCs before breakfast”), 2 DSOs, 2 MCs and one DCM25. W Beach must have been terrifying, but by mid-morning the 400-odd survivors could look back on what they had accomplished through their sacrifice.  Friendly fire from HMS Euryalus had knocked out one part of Lancashire Fusiliers which had got ashore, but another group had fought their way through the defences and met up with the 2nd Royal Fusiliers on Hill 114. The beach was now carried, and a line established inland. Late in the afternoon the Anson platoon and 1st Essex, landed to reinforce the dilapidated ranks of 1st Lancashire Fusiliers. Because of the gallantry of the battalion here on 25th April, W Beach was renamed ‘Lancashire Landing’ in their honour, and was thereafter referred to by this name.

29th Division
The history of 29th Division
As regular units from the further garrisons of Empire arrived back in England after having received recall orders soon after war was declared, many having waited until a Territorial unit had gone out to replace them, they were formed up into three Divisions, numbered 27th to 29th. The 29th, consisting of units that arrived from the most distant stations, was formed in the Stratford-Warwick-Leamington-Rugby-Nuneaton area of Warwickshire in January-March 1915. Originally intended for France, pressure on Lord Kitchener to launch a ground attack at Gallipoli forced him to deploy the Division there.
The 29th Division embarked at Avonmouth on 16-22 March 1915 and went via Malta to Alexandria. On 7 April the first units to have arrived at Egypt bena ro re-embark for the move to Mudros, the deep water harbour at the island of Imbros that was going to be used as a forward base for operations at Gallipoli. The Division landed at Cape Helles on Gallipoli on 25 April 1915.
The 29th Division comprised of the following three Brigades; 86th, 87th and 88th Brigades.
88th Brigade
4th Battalion Worcester Regiment
2nd Battalion Hampshire Regiment
1st Battalion Essex Regiment
1st Battalion Royal Newfoundland Regiment
1/5th Battalion Royal Scots
2/1st Battalion London Regiment
